Monroeville is a charming, small southern town—the essence of everything southern. The town serves as the county seat of Monroe County, conveniently located in the "hub" of southwest Alabama, almost equidistant between the capital city of Montgomery, and the port of Mobile. Monroeville’s town square and downtown area are the heart of the community, with the county courthouse, museum, chamber of commerce office, city hall and local retail and professional offices centered in this historic district. Monroeville’s market area is a 30-mile radius of the downtown square, and draws a population of over 55,000 people who come to Monroeville for retail, commercial and health care needs.

Monroeville was declared "The Literary Capital of Alabama" in 1997, by joint declaration of both houses of the Alabama legislature, as a tribute to Nelle Harper Lee and Truman Capote, two of the county’s most famous authors. Monroeville’s most remarked annual event is the Monroe County Heritage Museum’s production of the late Christopher Sergel’s play, "To Kill A Mockingbird." The production involves an all volunteer amateur cast, some of whom have been with the play since its inception eleven years ago. The whole town is involved with this three week event which draws thousands of visitors. Other noted events are the annual Alabama Writers Symposium, hosted by Alabama Southern Community College the first weekend in May, and festivals such as Peterman Station Arts and Crafts, the Dogwood Festival, Christmas Tree Lighting on Downtown Square, etc., which take place throughout the year.

Monroeville is a college town: Alabama Southern Community College’s beautiful campus is an area landmark. The college offers associate degrees in a number of subjects, as well as adult continuing education classes and sports programs such as baseball, softball, tennis, basketball, etc.

Monroe County is a sportsman’s mecca, a hunter’s dream. The county is bounded on the west by the Alabama River, and fishing and boating in area lakes and streams are an enjoyable pastime for city and county residents. People come to Monroe County to find a lifestyle enjoyed by very few people in the world today.

Recreational opportunities abound, through the local YMCA, which has over 400 local members. Golf is a major attraction, with local Vanity Fair Golf & Tennis Club offering a beautiful and challenging 18-hole golf course, swimming facilities, and clubhouse. Tennis is played year-round due to the moderate climate. City parks and hiking trails are enjoyed by residents and visitors.

Monroeville has excellent health-care facilities, with 94-bed Monroe County Hospital meeting health care needs for area residents, and a number of doctor’s and specialty clinics in the area. Monroeville is a small southern town where quality is key.
