SPANISH FORT

   Spanish Fort rests on a high hill overlooking Mobile Bay. Originally a strategic defense site for Spanish soldiers, the area saw action in the revolutionary war, the War of 1812, and the civil War. Its history dates back to 1781 shortly after the American Revolution When Spanish troops defending the City of Mobile engaged British troops attempting to re-captured Mobile. In 1865, 20,000 Union Army troops were stopped at Spanish Fort by three Confederate Brigades. The Confederate Forces, outnumbered 10 to 1, engaged the Union Forces in the last battle of the War Between the States -- March 26-April 9, 1865. Carefully preserved breastworks from the Civil War, now softened by azaleas, dogwoods, and tall trees, still run through the area's subdivisions.
    In response to Spanish Fort's widening popularity as a residential community so readily accessible to mobile across Battleship Parkway, it was incorporated in 1993 and plays an increasingly integral role as part of the Eastern Shore's economic growth.
