Community Links: Bayside Daphne emerged in the early 18th century simply as a gathering point for fur traders from Europe. It was claimed first by the French, later by the Spanish, then by the British, but it was settled finally by the new Americans. The American colonists came on the scene in 1799. Legend says General Andrew Jackson directed his troops from the fork on one of Daphne's gigantic live oaks during the War of 1812. "Jackson's Oak" still flourishes in Daphne. The town became a resort area for Mobile and New Orleans residents prior to the Civil War. Wealthy families would flee the cities during the yellow-fever-ridden summers. Elegant hotels were built along the waterfront to catch the bay breezes. One of those, the Howard Hotel, now functions as Bayside Academy, Baldwin County's only private, college-preparatory school. Many stately homes of the ante-bellum era still stand along the Eastern Shore. One home in Daphne remembers a decisive battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Mobile Bay. A cannonball from one of the Union Admiral David Farragut's ships passed through the front door and out the back. That home is still occupied today.
