EUFAULA
Nestled along the banks of the Chattahoochee River, Eufaula is
committed to sustaining its historic landmarks and natural resources for future
generations to enjoy. Eufaula boasts over 700 homes and edifices on the National
Register of Historic Places. One of these, the Couric-Smith home on North
Eufaula Avenue, received national attention in 1999 when NBC Today Show host,
Katie Couric traced her family's roots to Eufaula. Another National Register
property, the Shorter Mansion, serves as the official home of the Eufaula
Heritage Association and as the headquarters for Eufaula's annual pilgrimage
tour of homes. The neoclassical revival style mansion offers visitors a glimpse
into Eufaula's past. It contains portraits and mementos of the six Alabama
governors from Barbour County and is beautifully furnished with period antiques.
Fendall Hall, a property maintained by the Alabama Historical Commission, is
another unique architectural gem. It is a rare example of the 1860-era Italianate style, and three rooms feature the finest Victorian-era
murals painted by a traveling French artist in the 1880s.
Eufaula is also replete with natural resources. A 46,000 acre lake has earned
Eufaula the title of the "bass fishing capital of the world." Several
marinas serve the lake and provide fishing and recreational boating
opportunities. The Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is also a popular natural
destination. Located on over 11,000 acres, the Refuge gives visitors the
opportunity to view native wildlife, and its visitor's center is maintained by
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For the serious hunter, Eufaula is a natural
Mecca, offering a large population of deer, turkey, and fowl. Three private
plantations and hunting lodges give their visitors the chance to bring home a
trophy buck. The Wildlife Refuge also permits managed hunting during certain
times of the year.
Whether you are a history buff or an outdoor sports enthusiast, you will enjoy
all that Eufaula has to offer.
