Florala is located approximately 100 miles south of Montgomery, 70 miles east of Pensacola, and 250 miles west of Tallahassee and 70 miles northwest of Panama City, Florida. We are directly on the Alabama/Florida state lines. This is a great retirement community! There are plenty of civic activities in our community including garden, Lions, Ruritan, Civic, and XYZ clubs, as well as Prime Timers Group, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Stars and many others. And, of course, there is always the Chamber of Commerce. There are over 40 churches, including: Baptist, AME, Apostolic, Assembly, Jewish, Church of God, Methodist, Mormon, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, and United Methodist. We also have a great health care system with a hospital in Florala and four more within 20 miles. Florala is fast becoming known for it’s many antique stores. Florala and Lockhart each have a RV Park with full facilities. For your dining pleasure, there are numerous restaurants - both sit-down and fast food. The weather in the area is just about perfect! Average daytime temperatures during the summer months average around 90 to 95; with the fall and spring months about 70 to 80 and the mild winters are around 50 – 60. We do have a fairly high humidity rate of between 70 and 80%. And, we have seasonal changes that help prevent diseases and bugs associated with continuous high or low climates. With beautiful Lake Jackson (450 acres of natural fed water) and the Florala State Park located here and the Beaches of South Walton County less than an hour away, there are always water activities. There are walking and birding trails located within the area as well. Fishing and hunting is prevalent throughout both states. We can always find things to do and places to go. For example, if you are interested in traveling, you are within 25 miles of I-10 and 50 miles from I-65. Florida has no state income tax and a 7% sales tax. Alabama has a state income tax and 8% sales tax. Water is available throughout the cities and sewage and natural gas is available in most areas. We are within one hour driving distance of several large metropolitan areas and military facilities (i.e., Ft. Walton and Pensacola, Florida and Dothan, Alabama).
