Georgiana
COMMUNITY LINKS The Legend of Hank Williams Sr.
Georgiana was incorporated as a town in 1869. The present site of the town was picked our by Pitt S. Milner, a Baptist minister who came here from Pike County, Georgia to establish his homestead in 1855. He established a post office the same year, naming it Georgiana, the name being a combination of Georgia and Anna, for his young daughter. The first train came into Georgiana on July 4, 1859 and the town began to grow steadily. Early trade and prosperity centered on the mercantile business, consisting largely in the buying and selling of cotton. The census of 1990 lists Georgiana's population at 1933. There are currently a 22 bed hospital and modern medical clinics, a nursing home provided skilled and intermediate care, many churches and public schools for kindergarten through high school. Georgiana has gained national name recognition as the hometown of Hank Williams, Sr. country music star, and festival paying tribute to him held the first weekend in June annually. The boyhood home of Hank was purchased by the city in 1992 and is now open to the public as museum.
