Jasper is a town of approximately 14,000 people, and 35,000 within a five-mile radius, and is a growing community within 38 miles of downtown Birmingham. We have the best of both worlds – the peace and safety of a small town with a large metropolitan city 45 minutes away. Jasper has everything that retirees might like. It is a beautiful area in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. We have a lot of trees, a 500-mile circumference lake within 12 miles of downtown Jasper, and the average temperature is 62 degrees annually. It is just a great place for retirees. We have a large medical center here. Through Community Senior Life, Inc., seniors can enjoy a variety of activities including Seniorcise, a low impact aerobics program taught by a certified instructor. Seniors are also invited to join in for a lively round of rook, canasta, dominos or checkers on Thursdays or bridge groups twice a week. Additional activities include day trips and cruises, fun and educational courses on topics ranging from computers to health and nutrition, and the annual Senior Celebration, an evening of dinner and dancing. These programs and more take place at the Community Health Systems Activity Center, a 37,000 square foot facility built specifically for serving its community and especially its seniors. Smith Lake, a recreational reservoir, has 500 miles of shoreline and a length of 35 miles. The lake is 510 feet above sea level and 264 feet deep at the dam. It has power storage of 194,700,000-kilowatt hours. The dam draws nearly 40,000 visitors each year. Every major religious denomination is represented in Walker County. There are more than 50 Churches in the City of Jasper, alone. Many conduct extensive activities and social, charitable, and community services such as summer schools, kindergartens and day care services. The area is home to some of the most beautiful and historic church structures to be found anywhere. Jasper and Walker County has a rich political heritage, having had a resident serving in the United States Congress for the entire past Century. We are unaware of any other rural community in the country that can make that claim. If you love golf, Jasper is the right place. Whether you are a seasoned golfer by game or by claim, Walker County has several courses in which to choose, each with its own personality. And best of all, golfers can tee off year round! Set on the outer edge of Jasper, the Musgrove Country Club offers its members 18 holes of golf on bent grass greens. While Musgrove is the only private course in Walker County, it features a unique and challenging experience for its golfers at several of its holes. Holes 1, 9 and 10, for instance require a golfer to hit over Blackwater Creek and the small dam constructed beneath without losing the ball. The course also offers one large and one small putting green, a driving range and a new fleet of electric golf carts for a quiet ride and fantastic golfing experience.
