Phil Campbell was the first city or town in the state of Alabama to be named
after and individual using the first and last name of that individual. In the
1880's a railroad company was laying track from Florence to Birmingham, Alabama
and the rail lines passed through this part of the country. A local land owner
contacted the Project Engineer of the railroad construction crew and promised
any community that developed around a sidetrack and depot that was adjacent to
his land, would be named after the engineer. the sidetrack was laid and the
depot built, and in 1911 the town of Phil Campbell was incorporated in honor of
Mr. Phil Campbell, the Project Engineer.
The town lies in the hill country between the Shoals area and Birmingham. Its
scenic beauty and rural atmosphere make it an ideal place to visit and to live.
The town is located in some of the country's best hunting and fishing areas.
Phil Campbell is the home of the Dismal Canyon. Dismals Canyon, brooding,
mysterious, steeped in a legend and filled with natural phenomenon is featured
in Reader's Digest's "Off The Beaten Path" as one of America's most
interesting and still un-crowded places to visit.
Named by the first settlers who were both fascinated and awed by this wild
canyon, visitors step back to the time when the earth was clean and the water
was clear. Aside from the necessary clearing of the trails, the area is now, as
it has been for centuries, completely natural.
Phil Campbell is also home to Northwest-Shoals Community College; Alabama's
first Junior College founded in 1963 as Northwest Alabama State Junior College
to provide access to post secondary education for citizens of the rural counties
of northwest Alabama. it was the first public junior college in the Alabama
College System and was accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges in 1967. the Phil Campbell campus is located
approximately 35 miles south of the Shoals campus, with easy access from either
U.S. Highway 43 or Alabama Highway 13. Located on a scenic 101 acres, one miles
southwest of the town of Phil Campbell, the campus has 8 separate buildings
which provide the full range of academic and student services, technical
programs and many community services.
Phil Campbell nestled in the hills of southern Franklin County has many things
to offer and is growing along with the rest of Franklin County
